Join Us on the Franklin

Packrafting Tasmania now has a licence from Parks & Wildlife to deliver a river running course that includes a training and preparation day and then an 8-day adventurous journey tackling the mighty, world-renowned Franklin River. Due to its world heritage status and natural beauty the Franklin has been called ‘one of the top 10 multi-day rafting trips in the world’. Note that participants need to have undertaken prior training with Packrafting Tasmania in order to be deemed suitable for this trip.

After a pre-trip preparation day that includes on-water training near Hobart, the river trip starts at the Collingwood River Bridge on the Lyell Hwy and finishes 110 kilometres later on the Gordon River. From there the group will be collected by the ‘Stormbreaker’ - an ocean going yacht that will take them the 65 km to Strahan. Transport to and from Hobart is included in the package.

This river includes numerous challenging sections and physical portages. It also has the potential for rapid rises in river levels and for significant weather events. Learn the skills to negotiate such challenges safely and competently. Join us, including Senior Whitewater Instructor Dan Hall, who has guided the Franklin over 70 times, on this incredible journey.

If you haven’t paddled with us previously please join one of our many instructional courses and we will be able to provide you a framework for getting to the level of this adventurous multi-day journey down the mighty Franklin River.

The Franklin is a serious undertaking!

Gain the skills & knowledge to undertake it safely!

Learn skills from the professionals

“A large part of our focus as instructors & guides is to help clients gain the skills and confidence to ultimately undertake these adventures on their own.”

Experience incredible natural beauty along the way!

The Franklin’s natural aesthetics are world renowned and for good reason. The area’s annual rainfall can be up to as much as 2500mm (2.5 metres) per year. This makes for numerous waterfalls, breathtaking side canyons and an ever changing environment.

Be prepared to be amazed at just how many different greens can exist in the south west!

On this trip we all work as a team, as safety is our primary concern

Having a guide like Dan on the trip who has paddled the Franklin over 70 times gives the team access to incredible knowledge and experience. This river has many challenges, many of which are made easier and safer through the assistance of professional river guides and instructors.

Undertake an adventure that you have always dreamed of

But, do it with the added safety and guidance of professional instructors/guides who know the river and its dangers.

  • A quote from one of our clients

I've been fortunate to be able to participate in several of their courses both interstate and here in Tasmania. Additionally, I've been lucky enough to be able to float the Franklin River with Dan this past summer. A trip I would highly recommend to all.

This great team provide an exceptional educational / adventure program and I can't imagine them doing any aspect of what they do any better.

Furthermore, in this arena, safety is paramount and these guys have your back in spades.
